PRP for Hair Loss

Hair loss is a prevalent condition that impacts all ages and genders; however, is most commonly seen as female pattern hair loss starting in patients 30’s years of age and beyond. Platelet-rich plasma, commonly known as PRP, is an effective treatment for hair loss that uses your own plasma-rich platelets extracted from a person’s own blood to stimulate hair follicles to grow.

WHAT DOES PRP INVOLVE

The treatment begins by taking your blood quickly and comfortably. Then we separate the plasma rich platelets in your blood using a machine called a “centrifuge”. We will then sterilise the treatment area of your scalp and provide numbing to the area as well. We are then able to treat your scalp by injecting the PRP.

IS PRP RIGHT FOR ME?

PRP is especially popular treatment amongst women whereas hair transplant solutions are not a viable option, as female tend to lose their hair quite differently to men. “Female pattern hair loss” shows an overall thinning where men have per area located baldness which would make them candidates for transplant.
PRP, especially when combined with our other hair loss treatment plans, can help to successfully change the course of thinning hair. Our team of Doctors, Nurses and clinicians will help guide you through the consultation process and determine if PRP if the correct treatment for you.

CAUSES OF HAIR LOSS IN WOMEN

Hormonal changes
Pregnancy
Genetic factors
Menopause
Stress
Chemotherapy
Thyroid conditions
Anaemia
Autoimmune conditions
Psoriasis
Skin conditions
Chemical damage (styling chemicals, etc.)

PRP may not be safe for some patients with certain, habits or medical conditions including:
Patients on blood thinning medication
Patients with blood disorders that can cause platelet dysfunction, platelet poor plasma, or problems with clotting and wound healing
Heavy smokers – this can affect the clotting process and can negatively affect your hair growth, which cancels out the point of getting PRP
Patients with skin or scalp infections – needs to be treated and fully healed prior to PRP treatment

WHAT RESULTS CAN I EXPECT?

PRP is injected all over the scalp, where research has shown that after several treatments and over the course of time (hair grows slow), new hair starts to grow. This helps to stop further hair loss, increases the number of hairs per centimetre, and thus causes the hair to thicken. The effect can be quite dramatic when the process is successful. It’s better to start PRP earlier rather than later for best results. It can take up to six months to start seeing results, but some patients can start to see results in as little as two months.
The injections can cause a minor swelling, bruising and in some cases minor bleeding, but this subsides quickly.
We typically recommend 3 treatments initially, 4 weeks apart. Then 1 treatment every 6 months after the initial treatments. For more severe cases, this treatment plan could involve more initial treatments and increased frequency of maintenance treatments. This is all discussed during your consultation and review appointments.
