What causes hair loss ?
Hair loss caused by sensitivity to DHT (dihydrotestosterone) occurs through a process known as androgenetic alopecia, commonly referred to as male or female pattern baldness.
DHT is a hormone derived from testosterone through the action of the 5-alpha reductase enzyme. While DHT plays a role in hair regulation, individuals with a genetic sensitivity to it experience progressive hair thinning over time.
Here’s how it happens:
• DHT binds to hair follicle receptors, particularly on the scalp.
• In sensitive individuals, DHT causes follicles to shrink, a process called miniaturisation.
• As the follicles shrink, hair strands become thinner, weaker, and shorter.
• DHT also shortens the anagen phase (the hair growth phase), leading to increased shedding and reduced hair regrowth.
• Over time, prolonged exposure to DHT can cause the affected follicles to stop producing hair altogether, resulting in visible hair thinning and balding.
How do I know which treatment is right for me ?
We recommend starting with the treatment option you feel most comfortable with. Once you begin, Dr. Tass may adjust your dosage or recommend a different approach based on your progress and individual needs.
If you’re unsure, our friendly hair team is here to help! Simply email hair@drtass.com.au, and we’ll guide you toward the most suitable treatment for you.
