Hair Transplant Procedure
Hair transplantation is a medical procedure that redistributes healthy hair follicles from a donor area (usually the back or sides of the scalp) into areas of thinning or hair loss. Over time, the transplanted follicles may continue to produce hair in their new location, which can support improved density and coverage in the treated areas.
At Dr Tass Clinics, hair transplant procedures are performed by Dr Vikram Jayaprakash, an experienced hair restoration doctor with over a decade of experience in both Australia and New Zealand. Dr Jayaprakash is Board Certified with the American Board of Hair Restoration Surgery and has extensive experience treating hair loss in both men and women across a range of hair types and ethnicities.
Hair transplant outcomes vary between individuals and depend on factors such as the degree of hair loss, donor hair quality, scalp health, and ongoing hair-loss progression.
Is a Hair Transplant Right for Me?
Hair transplantation may be suitable for individuals who:
• Have areas of thinning or hair loss that have stabilised
• Have sufficient donor hair available
• Want a long-term hair restoration option
• Prefer a treatment using their own follicles
• Are realistic about gradual improvement and the need for personalised planning
A detailed consultation is required to assess suitability, donor capacity, and potential outcomes.
Benefits of Hair Transplantation
Hair transplantation may assist with:
• Improving the appearance of hair density in targeted areas
• Restoring definition to hairlines or eyebrows
• Achieving a natural-looking result using your own follicles.
• Providing a long-term solution for selected candidates
Individual results vary.
What Does the Procedure Involve?
Hair transplant procedures are performed under local anaesthetic. Small follicular unit grafts are taken from the donor region and re-implanted into thinning areas. Each graft typically contains 1–3 hairs, and the number required depends on the extent of hair loss and the treatment goals.
Two main techniques are offered:
FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation / Strip Method)
• FUT involves removing a narrow strip of hair-bearing scalp from the donor area
• The strip is carefully divided into grafts, which are then placed into thinning areas
• The donor area is closed with fine sutures, leaving a thin linear scar that is usually concealed by surrounding hair
FUE (Follicular Unit Excision)
• FUE involves extracting follicles individually from the donor area using a specialised punch device
• Grafts are then implanted into thinning areas in a similar way to FUT
• This technique leaves tiny dot-like scars that are typically not noticeable once healed
Your clinician will advise which method is most appropriate for your hair type, scalp condition and goals.
What Results Can I Expect?
After the procedure, small scabs may form in the treated area and usually shed naturally within 7–10 days. Some transplanted hairs may shed in the first few weeks, which is a normal part of the hair cycle. New growth may begin in the following months, with visible improvements typically developing gradually.
Hair restoration outcomes vary, and final density depends on donor supply, scalp response and ongoing hair-loss patterns. Your clinician will guide you through realistic expectations during consultation.
Follow-Up and Treatment Planning
Hair transplantation is typically a one-day procedure, with follow-up appointments are scheduled to monitor healing, growth and scalp health. Some individuals may consider additional sessions in the future depending on their hair-loss pattern and goals.
A personalised treatment plan, including graft estimates and pricing, will be discussed during your consultation.
Areas That Can Be Treated
Hair transplantation may be used to support restoration in areas such as:
• Hairlines (male and female)
• Crown / vertex thinning
• Eyebrows
• Selected facial hair areas (where appropriate)
Suitability for each area is determined during consultation.
